The Humboldt Area Center for Harm Reduction (The Center) is committed to building stronger, healthier communities by co-creating spaces that foster dignity, equity and choice. Founded in 2014, by Brandie Wilson, The Center has spent the last seven years improving the health and wellness of people who use drugs (PWUD), experiencing homelessness, and engaged in sex work in Northern California’s Humboldt County, through advocacy, education and harm reduction services including syringe access, linkage to low barrier Medication Assisted Treatment, Case Management and Naloxone distribution . We are a peer-led organization that is working to save lives of people in our community by distributing over 2,400 naloxone kits and playing a part in 200 overdose reversals in 2020. In a 2021 participant survey, over 50% of our participants say that The Center is the only place they feel welcome and safe accessing services.
practice and purpose
The Center is dedicated to approaching harm reduction from a peer-led model. Our purpose is to meet people exactly where they are at. We understand substance use as existing on a spectrum and expect people to make their own choices on how to practice harm reduction in their lives.
While we advocate for all drug users, we prioritize those living in the margins due to prejudice, social economic status, and mental health care inequities.
